Residence Options A big thing I was looking forward to in college was living on my own and having my own place to call my “home” for the next four years of my life.   Prior to coming to college, I wish I knew more about my living options, so in this post I’ve put together a little summary of the different residence halls you can live in and different apartments and locations you can sign after your freshman year!   Freshman Year: Residence Halls Residence halls are categorized as either university housing or private certified housing. University Housing University housing has 24 different units scattered throughout campus. Urbana North residence halls are all located within a 1o minute walk to the Quad and include specialty restaurants in their dining halls. Urbana South is a little further away, but conveniently is right next to multiple bus routes that can take you anywhere around campus! The Ikenberry Commons, or more commonly known as the Six Pack, is where a large population of our freshmen live and houses a large dining hall facility shared by all the residence halls surrounding it. Wassaja Hall, the newest addition to University Housing residence halls Private Certified Housing (PCH) There are 11 different PCH units around campus. These halls are privately owned but approved by the university. PCH offers dining plans and a more suite-style layout. Depending on what you are looking for, some PCH halls are religiously affiliated, some have private suite-style bathrooms, and each hall is located in a unique area so you can find one which best suits your taste! Realtor companies set up booths and give students information on the different locations they own, pricing, amenities, etc. It is a great way to gain a lot of general information about the apartment options that are available to you around campus! Finding the right place to live can be overwhelming at times, but there are lots of resources out there to help you find the best fit for you! Living in a new location every year has been a great experience for me, and Ive loved every bit of it. And I hope you, too, can find a place you can call home here at Illinois! This had a big impact on me. It made me not want anything to do with writing, because I thought I wasn’t any good at it. My senior year in high school I was put in Mrs. Effie Stidham’s class. She was the new teacher that year and no one really knew her, but she cared for her kids in class. She was the type of teacher who would really help with any problem, and she would do it in a way nobody else knew. The second day of class we had an essay to write, and it was about stop lights. Well I talked to her and told her about my problem. About me not liking to write and wasn’t that good at it. So she came up with the idea for me to write about anything I could, so the first thing to hit my mind was some personal problems I had been having. One page led to another and it really felt great to get it out and off my chest. After I stared to write about all my problems I felt free, like I was expressing myself and doing away with my problems. That’s when my writing experience changed, it changed for the best. The only real problem I had was run on senesce and where to put comas. I had got into college, and my first year I took English under Randy Moon. He had brought new things to the table. Things that I needed to know, like where to put comas and what a run on was. He offered more help on how to write essays. It was hard for me to start writing essays, because here I was again trying to write about other things. Mr. Moon had made us try something in class one day called free writing. Free writing is where you start off on topic and write if your mind goes blank just keep writing about anything. Before you know it your mind goes right back to the topic. This has helped me so much to become a writer. I’m still not the best at writing, but it is a lot easier for me. I have become to like writing it’s one of my favorite subjects now. West Side Story West Side Story was one of the best plays that Kean has put on that I have seen. This play just happens to be one of my favorite movies that I have watched over and over again. I basically memerized all the scenes and songs. But of coarse the play has to be shorter then the movie, so certain things had to be cut out and changed a little bit. For example when the song "America" is sung in the movie, the guys and girls are going against each other, but in the play it was just girls singing to each other. I think the people chosen for the play perfectly fit their characters. The only person I thought that needed a little bit more work on his acting was the guy who played "Tony", Shayne Austin. Shayne has a great singing voice, but his acting seemed a tad bit rusty if you ask me. Over all everyone else seemed to be perfect for his or her parts. The play was very upbeat and exciting. There were times you laughed and times you cried. You always wanted to know what was going to happen next. Was there going to be a fight? Was someone going to die? Since the stage is so small not that many props could be used. The props that they did have were good. The fence symbolizied the playground, sowing machine showed the shop Maria worked in, the bed symbolized Maria's room, and the register showed the soda shop. All very good considering the size of the stage. Overall I think that this performance was extremely successful. It got the point across that it doesn't matter what race you are. You should put your differences aside and get to know people. And that's exactly how I feel about life. That everyone should get to know people before they judge them. People need to stop stereo typing others. For example: your Spanish so all you eat is rice and beans, your black so you rob people, and your white so you think your better then everyone else of a different race. All those stereo types are wrong and need to be change and I think this play shows that.
