The Dysfunctional Family of King Lear One of the reasons why Shakespeare is so thoroughly read today is because of his ability to portray human nature so accurately through his characters. Shakespeares play, King Lear shows us that humans are treacherous and selfish. We can also relate to the play because of the family issues that Shakespeare incorporates throughout the work. Lears family is definitely a dysfunctional one. However, the disrupted family unit is the basis for the plays tragedy. Lear changes not only as a king, but also as a man... as a father. Regardless of the warnings given to him by his trustful advisor Kent, Lear goes on to ask each of his daughters to profess their love for him, offering them pieces of the kingdom as a reward when he says: Great rivals in our youngest daughters love, Long in our court have made their amorous sojourn, And here are to be answered. Tell me my daughters, (Since now we will divest us both of rule, Interest of territory, cares of state) Which of you shall we say doth love us most? (I,i, 47-53) Kimbrough states that Lear loses his primary modes of identity when he consciously removes himself from the role of king and unconsciously removes himself from the role of parent; there is little left except his folly to guide him (138). This is first and most important thing Lear does wrong in the play. He abdicates his throne just to fuel his giant ego, setting of a chain of events that eventually lead to his demise in typical tragedy fashion (immense pain and suffering). â€Å"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn† begins in St. Petersburg, Missouri. Huckleberry â€Å"Huck† Finn and his friend, Thomas â€Å"Tom† Sawyer, have each come into a large amount of money from their previous adventures in â€Å"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer†. Huck explains that he is placed under the supervision of the Widow Douglas, trying to civilize him and teach him religion. Finding that life boring compared to his adventurous life before, he and Tom escape past Miss Watson’s slave Jim to meet with Tom’s gang of â€Å"robbers†. When those activities eventually bore him, his father, â€Å"Pap†, comes into town, an abusive alcoholic. Pap’s goal was to get Huck’s fortune and spend all of the money on alcohol for himself. Huck is successful in preventing that from happening, but Pap gains custody of Huck and leaves town with him. Pap makes Huck move to his cabin and is under his watch at all times. Huck escape s by faking his own death. Huck runs to Jackson’s Island, where he reunites with Jim, who has run away after overhearing Miss Watson planning to sell him â€Å"down the river† to other owners. Jim’s goal is to get to Cairo, Illinois, a free state, so he can buy his enslaved family’s freedom. At first, Huck is conflicted about the crime of helping a runaway slave, but soon connects with Jim. After heavy flooding on the river, the two find a raft and a house floating on the river. Cody Dwells 1-21-13 English 101 My writing experience hasn’t always been good. In fact I’ve had to get some help with it. I was the type that didn’t know how to start a sentence or end one. This had a big impact on me. It made me not want anything to do with writing, because I thought I wasn’t any good at it. My senior year in high school I was put in Mrs. Effie Stidham’s class. She was the new teacher that year and no one really knew her, but she cared for her kids in class. She was the type of teacher who would really help with any problem, and she would do it in a way nobody else knew. The second day of class we had an essay to write, and it was about stop lights. Well I talked to her and told her about my problem. About me not liking to write and wasn’t that good at it. So she came up with the idea for me to write about anything I could, so the first thing to hit my mind was some personal problems I had been having. One page led to another and it really felt great to get it out and off my chest. After I stared to write about all my problems I felt free, like I was expressing myself and doing away with my problems. That’s when my writing experience changed, it changed for the best. The only real problem I had was run on senesce and where to put comas. I had got into college, and my first year I took English under Randy Moon. He had brought new things to the table. Things that I needed to know, like where to put comas and what a run on was. He offered more help on how to write essays. It was hard for me to start writing essays, because here I was again trying to write about other things. Mr. Moon had made us try something in class one day called free writing. Free writing is where you start off on topic and write if your mind goes blank just keep writing about anything. Before you know it your mind goes right back to the topic. This has helped me so much to become a writer. I’m still not the best at writing, but it is a lot easier for me. I have become to like writing it’s one of my favorite subjects now. Writing is a very important part of life, no matter what you do. Sometimes you’re writing can determine if you get the big job or not.
